Sailed 3.4/86 super powered up, then switched to 72 liters which was so much better. I think I've found the sweet spot for the 72 liters: 25 knots gusting to 30. Landed some fat jumps and had some impressive wipeouts in front of the crowds :)

Juan Piantinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08109873030985626050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5855835665953806508.post-44132523647166026732016-05-07T18:04:00.001-05:002016-05-07T18:04:30.713-05:00Florence day 3I'm leaving early today before it gets big. Yeah I've been slacking off. But here we are, it's 2016, my 10th windsurfing anniversary. Yeah 10 years and I can't still land a damn forward. Anyway, today was a pretty nice season opener at Stevenson. E at 25 knots. I was on 86/4.2, with my "east wind" 24 cm center fin. (I call it an East wind fin because it's massive and gets me back to the launch on East days when wind and river current go in the same direction). I was slightly overpowered, so I had do downhaul the crap out of the sail. There were three other windsurfers out, it was good to see other people!

Anyway, the season is awwwn! Can't be happier ;)

Got to Doug's at about 10 and it was already honking. The wind had a lot of North in it so launching on 3.4/72 was tricky. Once you got to the mid section you could feel the power. When you got to the Oregon side you got blown off the water. By noon I retreated to the Hatch, where it was 3.7 but gusty as hell. Ended up at 4 or so on 4.7, but never I felt dialed in.
On a sad note, a SUPer is missing, he was last seen at the Hatch, his board was recovered. Hope he's well.

Juan Piantinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08109873030985626050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5855835665953806508.post-87246676887114671542015-08-07T22:13:00.001-05:002015-08-07T22:13:26.560-05:00Jones BeachNice sesh at Jones Beach/Nuke Alley today. The wind finally picked up in the afternoon, I had rigged to 6.5/105 combo and was too lazy to re rig, so I finished the session super powered up. Wind sensor was in the upper 30s when I left. The launch at Jones is weird: you launch from the Oregon side, and have to go through marginal wind til you get to Nuke Alley past the island (to the left in the picture). People launch on the WA side right on Nuke Alley, but the launch is just off the road, kinda shady...

Juan Piantinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08109873030985626050noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5855835665953806508.post-78728296201665534882015-07-31T22:53:00.001-05:002015-07-31T22:53:47.783-05:00OceansideFirst time out in the Oregon coast!! Forty miles of open water through the Straights of Juan de Fuca: massive rollers, strong currents, killer whales, and two international freighter lines. I keep getting emails of sesh reports, pictures (like the one below Of Tuson Poor by Trudy Lary), etc, etc. The guys in Chicago probably got some too because I know they were going out and I haven't heard from them. Everybody got some TOW this weekend! I had an awesome sesh on Friday at the Hatch, switching from 4.2/87 to 3.7/72 and back for the end of the day.
So I started right where I left more than two months ago, at Doug's beach on the Washington side. Wow, it's been more than two months, I felt a little rusty. Started with 3.7/86, but was slogging a bit so moved to 4.2, which worked perfect until 1:30. Wind kept coming up so went back to 3.7 until i left. Apparently the wind kept getting better and better, check out these pics taken by Trudy Lary in the late afternoon! Need to work on starboard jumps, back and forward loops. Those are the goals for the season!

Doug's notes: 4.2 worked well with 20 mph average. It was gusty so I went with a bigger 86 L board, but 72 would have been smoother.
Big rigs are fun, and once in a while I should be reminded of this.
Like today: 6.5/105 at Doug's... Had the river for myself, and that was a good thing because I was slogging a lot ;)
That's OK, I didn't feel like dying on a Friday. I don't know what made me call it, maybe it was the rainbows created by spray being blown off the top of the swells, maybe it was the blue skies, or maybe it was the rattling sound that the 3.7 made, like it was made out of Saran Wrap. Everything was beautiful in a "my last minute on earth" kind of way. Almost like God was telling me "look at all this beauty son, for the last time... Cuz you're an idiot and rigged to big..." So I packed my stuff and went to Stevenson where is was blowing only 30, rigged my 4.7/85/21 combo, and had myself a session. There were two other windsurfers, and two or three kiters. Beautiful.
Yeah the guy behind those goofy windsurfing movies that I posted over the years... Well he's taking it to 11 with his new creation, a hilarious take on the 2014 Hatteras wave Jam. If you're a little tired of the typical "dude ripping to a song" movie, you have to check this thing out.
December was insane with the holidays and everything. Turns out I ended up not riding for the whole month. So this was a very anticipated session after a long hiatus.

Rooster notes: wind was at E at 40 mph, water was at 40 F, air was at 45 F. I rigged 85L/4.2 m2 at the beginning, which was way too much. Rigged 3.7 and that was just perfect. The cold was not a problem at all. I was actually toasty in the 5.5/4/3 and a rash guard underneath. The main issue was (as expected), the hands. The Glacier gloves were warm but wearing them just killed my forearms. I think I could have done with open palm gloves. The Gorge winter crowd was there in full today (Trudy, Larry and others), it was great to ride with them!

Oh, and the icing on the cake was a snowboarding session in the afternoon! Good times ;)

Well, actually it turned out to be not that cold: water was at 50 degrees, air was at 30 when we started but climbed up to 40 by the end. Plus, Rooster has heated restrooms, so no going all Houdini in your car while putting on the wetsuit. It's like cheating almost! Wind was at around 30, so I rigged 85 L and 4.7, and it was perfect! I really like winter sessions, I don't know why I find cold weather almost more appealing than warm weather. And apparently there's a group of people here in the Gorge who like being splashed in the face with freezing water as well (and they've been doing it for years!), so I look forward to more winter sessions...

Best past of windsurfing: sharing the stoke, no doubts about that...

The guys in Chicago are having a killer fall season so far, with over 8 days of solid riding this month. Lake Michigan can deliver some epic conditions from the end of September until almost thanksgiving, and it's looking like this year will be a good one. The Lake may not have big predators, but has plenty of things to be scared about: frigid waters, strong currents, gusty winds and man-made obstacles that will chew your gear up. Definitely not for the faint of heart.

The forecast was spot on, it blasted from early morning until around three. When I got there in the morning it was blowing E at 35. Rigged 4.2 and 85 L and got blown off the water. Rigged 3.7 and that was the ticket. East winds on the Gorge are tricky, and i keep saying that. You have to always be sailing as close hauled as you can or you end up way downwind, and down current. Anyway, by 2 it came down to about 30, maybe upper 20s, so I rigged the 4.2 again and got one more hour of pure fun.
In other news, the Fall season in Chicago is firing up and the guys there are hoping for a double sesh this weekend. Today they had crazy conditions at Michigan City, with side shore winds in the 30s and massive swell. During this time of the year it is not rare to see three days in a row of wind in the 20s and waves in the teens, all you have to do is have the bowels to go out! Trust me, Lake Michigan in the Fall is no picnic. Well done Seeker and Little Bird!
Scouting the Oregon coast today. Stoped at Manzanita, they say the place fires up when Portland gets hot, so let's see if something happens in the afternoon. Swell is small but that's fine, don't want to get my butt kicked my first time out.

Sunday update: So the wind showed up later on Friday, and Saturday I had stuff going on so I missed a killer day at Rooster. But today I scored at Jones! First time out there, 5.3 and 85 L, the place is weird, but works when the Gorge and the coast are dead.
I caught the fading nuke fest. It was one of those days when every hour you have to go get something bigger. Which was ok because I got to try a lot of gear combos. Started with 72 and 3.7, that board is so slick! It was 40 gusting to 45 and I was lit up, but the board handles so well it's amazing. By 1 the wind dropped to 35 so I went to the 86 liter Goya one. After the 72 liter, the 86 felt big and smooth, still love that board. Grand finale was 85 and 4.7, again lit up til it dropped to mid 20s so I called it a day.

My wife calls this "an unhealthy attitude towards windsurfing", which she says is what I have. I'll reflect on the things I've done, you reflect on yours, but I'm pretty sure that except for a few, I'd do them again for a great sesh, and I'm afraid so would you.

Great sesh at Rooster Rock, the Pearl of the West Columbia, where the Easterlies hit hard. The walk to the water through the pool of mud is well worth it.

The details of the incident are irrelevant but involve being old and brittle. This morning I tried to go out on my 85 and 5.2, and my foot complained. A lot. Now I'm sitting at Stevenson watching the wind blow and barely standing on my sausage foot. Oh well, I missed a good day, there will be more...

This is Stevenson, WA. Temira and iW called it right with high teens to low 20s east of Hood River (which was pretty dead by the way). My first time at Doug's, the place has sandbars on both shores, so it's perfect for practicing new stuff. Foot is almost back, but still hurts so my moves were less than spectacular. It's good to be back on the water though!

Juan Piantinohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08109873030985626050noreply@blogger.com0
